Kids’ Do-It-Yourself Door Hangers

Posted on August 30th, 2010 in Hangers by hangers  Tagged ,

Kids have a lot of mood swings. One moment they are in jovial mood, the next minute they want to be left alone. This is when you get into conflict with them. So why not device a way for you to know what your kids currently feel?

Door hangers are a good option. Kids will love them because it allows them to ‘display’ their moods for the entire household to see. A ‘welcome’ door hanger in your kid’s room is indeed a welcome message. On the other hand, a ‘busy’ sign might be an indication that you should leave them alone for a while. Meanwhile, a ’shhh…sleeping’ or ‘do not disturb’ door hangers will give your kid their needed sleep.

These custom-made signs will not only release your kids’ creativity, it will also empower them to take control over their own feelings. It lets your kid express themselves as any adult would verbally do. Since your kids lack the facility to express their feelings, particularly if they are in a foul mood, these door hangers might do the trick.

The best door hangers are the ones that they made themselves. Here are few tips to encourage your kids to make their own:

1. Make them understand the purpose. The first step is to make your kids understand the purpose of creating the special project. Make them understand that it is a way for them to communicate their feelings with members of the household including you. Tell them that rather than crying or sulking or throwing tantrums, the door hangers will tell everyone what they feel.

2. Show them a sample a door hanger. Life imitates art. To make your kids understand how it should look like, offer them a sample. The internet has a lot of samples, download one with their favorite character to make them more enthusiastic.

3. Give them the materials. After making them understand the purpose of the project. Give them the materials that they would need:

o Cardboad paper or illustration paper cut in a shape they desire (rectangular ones are the best). Be sure to leave a space on top for the door knob hole.

o Coloring materials (pens, permanent markers, pastel, water color)

Let you kids’ imagination run wild. You can offer them optional items to make their door hangers look more delightful. Try giving them some colored threads, ribbons, beads, sea shells and some glue and you would be surprised with what they can do with these things.

Voila! You’ve got yourself an instant door hanger. Apart from giving your kids something to do, it is also free time for you – a very rare opportunity indeed.

How to Properly Make a Beautiful Set of Fairy Wings

Posted on August 29th, 2010 in Hangers by hangers  Tagged ,

Creating a set of beautiful fairy wings is an enjoyable and simple project since the steps are very simple and easy to follow in order to create a pair of wings. It is considered as a vital addition to any dress-up box of any young girl.

MATERIALS NEEDED IN CREATING FAIRY WINGS

The materials needed are craft wire, a pair of pantyhose, duct tape, sewing needle, wire hanger, elastic, scissors, thread, wire cutter, ribbons, feathers (optional), sequins, fabric and glitter.

STEPS IN MAKING FAIRY WINGS

Use four wire hangers. It is advisable to choose coated hangers because this type of hanger is easier to mold compared with the traditional one. You can also ask the dry cleaners in your community if they can give you the used hangers for free.

You can use beading wire if you are creating smaller wings-sixteen gauge or smaller. Begin with a pair of hangers. Carefully snip the hook where the wire spiral begins. Then twist the spiral portion to the right of the first hanger and then on the 2nd hanger to the left. Overlap the two twisted portions. Use pliers for this purpose.

Use duct tape to bind the two portions together. Use the same process with the remaining hangers. Shape the hangers into the shape of wing that you want. You can look online for wing pictures that you can use as your reference.

Secure the pairs of wings with duct tape. You now have four wings. Use two pairs of panty hose. You can acquire them at department stores or pharmacies. Fit each sock over the wings. Carefully place it to the middle of each set-up and twist the wings while holding the end portion of the nylon.

You can secure it to one of the wires or just tighten the nylons to the middle until the 2 pairs of wings are secure. Place velvet on the center with glue. Place the seam of glue behind your back to hide it. Paint your wings with the color that you want and use glitter to enhance its look.

Use stretchable hair bands to create the shoulder bands. It is advisable to place the band on the velvet portion of the set-up so that you can hide the seam. Create a knot in the bond to make a loop and then place it both the upper and lower part of the right wing.

If possible, stretch the knot through the middle. This is a good way to place the bands without sewing them. You can use feathers if you want to have angel wings. Place each feather one at a time with glue. Remember to place feather at both sides of the set-up.

You can place superglue along the outer portions of your masterpiece where the wire meets the house to avoid it from snagging easily. You can also use starch or a sealant for this purpose. You now have pair of wings that your younger sister or daughter can use while playing dress-up.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Remember to plan ahead before doing this project like preparing all of the materials that you will need so that you can use your time wisely. You also have to wear safety goggles especially when painting the wings to avoid any unnecessary accidents.

Garment Hangers and the Victorian Era

Posted on August 24th, 2010 in Hangers by hangers  Tagged , ,

The proliferation of retail stores over the past 50 or so years, thanks to the wonders of ready-to-wear clothing, has resulted in the development of garment hangers as both an ultra-functional piece of household gadgetry and as a work of art to complement its surroundings.

Many articles have been written on how O.A. North of New Britain, Connecticut and Albert J. Parkhouse of the Timberlake Wire and Novelty Company in Jackson, Michigan both brought the modern wire coat hanger into being in 1869 and 1903, respectively. Even President Thomas Jefferson supposedly got into the act with his own prototype of the wooden garment hanger. While these are facts that can still be argued, one thing that is sure is that the very idea of a hanger was a child of a very basic yet utterly complicated issue in the 1800s.

Anyone who’s seen a photo or two (or better yet, a period movie) from this era will instantly associate this century with the massive Victorian women’s bustles and skirts so popular then with members of royalty and high society. While these fine, flowing clothes looked quite elegant in public, storing them was another, more cumbersome matter altogether. These items required much care when being put into storage, so inventors and manufacturers soon came up with the idea of a clothes hanger that could be built so that dresses would keep their shape, while being stored vertically like a coat to maximize storage space.

This spurred the development of the garment hanger, pushing designers to come up with ideas like folding travel hangers and hangers with hooks for belts. Tailors and clothing merchants also grew wise to the fact that they could use these garment hangers for advertising purposes. Hundreds of hanger design patents flooded the US Patent Office, and garment hangers soon became the indispensable item known and found all over the world today.

Temporary Storage Options For Your Clothes

Posted on August 20th, 2010 in Hangers by hangers  Tagged , , ,

Fabric wardrobes are a great budget idea for storage, or for when you just need temporary hanging space for your clothes. If you’re a student or moving house these should suit your needs perfectly. They are delivered flat pack and can be assembled in seconds. Fabric wardrobes are usually made of a nylon cover which wraps around a plastic frame. Typical dimensions are 150cm tall, 75cm wide, and 50cm deep.

To go with a fabric wardrobe you might also want to buy a few clothes hangers, suit hangers or trouser hangers. These are all different types of hanger designed for different needs, but they usually come with a non-slip design.

Trouser hangers are like normal clothes hangers, but the hanger loop does not connect to the hook on one side, leaving an open gap. This is so you can easily drape your trousers over the hanger, without the hassle of threading them through the small opening in the hanger.

Suit hangers are designed to hang a jacket and trousers or a skirt together. They have a curved shape to replicate the curve of your shoulders, so that your jacket hangs as it would when worn. Some also come with adjustable clips to hold your clothes in place. Suit hangers are great for travelling, as your suit will keep its shape even when folded up into a luggage case.

Hangers not referred to as either suit or trouser hangers are usually just cheap plastic clothes hangers that don’t have a non-slip design. These are fine for most peoples needs.
